In the beginning… there was light.
After what seemed an eternity, Christopher David Tsanos was born into this world and raised in a small hamlet called Queens.
Always observing the urban world around him, Chris would draw for enjoyment. He attended Parsons School of Design for Illustration in the early 90's.
Always fond of food and shelter, Chris somewhat forsook his artistic dreams to make a living doiing graphic and web design and typing code.
Chris now has a teeny studio in Red Hook where he is continuing his painting in hopes of having more of them than he knows what to do with.
A a native New Yorker, I have always been inundated with the overwrought vistas of the urban landscape. Fortunately, I have always loved and been fascinated by them. In my work I am concerned with finding a moment within the smaller, mundane sights around me and raising them to the grandeur of the larger scene from where they came.
I do this by framing my view in close and pulling "unfinished" scenery out, scenery which continues beyond the edge of the canvas. It is my hope to have the imagination extend the view into the space around the canvas.
I add further dimension to my oil paintings by adding texture with sculptural applications of gesso, paint, and a cellulose-based compound attached to the unprimed canvas. I also add wood, wire and other objects onto the painted canvas. Both applications are applied in a way to mimic real life counterparts, adding to the overall vision of the scene. It is my attempt to bring out the experience of the scene I had when I chose to paint it by further pushing the work into the room itself.
